Introduction

Research and education in the university is closely affiliated to society in general. Our laboratory specifies and displays this relationship through designs and implements them in society.
The performances of our staff making contributions to society were already highly valued through the Good Design Award and the Urban Landscape Award. Our laboratory will promote social contribution, aiming to establish a disaster resistant society which ensures quality of life.
Local fields provide wonderful opportunity for students to have hands-on learning practice. On the other hand, in order to put the outcomes of research into practice in society, gaining cooperation from local residents is essential. Therefore, through hands-on education and research at studio and with the participation of local residents, we promote research on regional design which is resilient, while paying thoughtful attention to their history, culture, and landscape.
Especially, in Mashiki-machi, an area which suffered enormous damage from the Kumamoto Earthquake, we built a satellite institute called Mashiki Labo in October 2016. This institute functions as an important base for the reconstruction of the area, and we also can listen to the voices of residents when we suggest specific approaches. We support reconstruction, being a liaison between municipalities and residents.
